Schedule

Bearings will operate as both  a bike school and open community bike shop.  We have weekly classes that focus on a particular topic and part of the topic, and we also host open shop hours where you can come in to volunteer and/or work on your bike.

DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATIONS: 

Tuesdays:                                                                                         workshop/open shop (see schedule below)

Wednesdays:                                                                                              Orientation and introduction to Bearings: This will be offered every other Wednesday from 7-9pm.   Please stop by to visit and speak with a collective member about Bearings and share any interests you have with the collective!!  These hours can also be used to volunteer and/ or use volunteer hours towards open shop hours to work on your own project.

Thursdays: 6:30-9:30                                                                                  Weekly workshop/Open shop

Saturday: pop-up hours TBA!

Workshops offered in April 2013

WEEK 1: 4/4                                                                                                  Frames: Fitting,Sizing, and Adjusting: “What kind of bike is best for me?”                         -This class will provide you with the tools necessary to know what frames and components will work for you to give you a comfortable ride.

WEEK 2: 4/11                                                                                                         “On the road again..”                                                                                                                                          -This workshop is geared for those who need to get their bikes ready for the road after the winter months. Frame assessment and basic maintenance.

WEEK 3: 4/18                                                                                                        “Fix a Flat”                                                                                                                                                        - Learn the necessary steps to fixing a flat while you’re on the side of the road with a flat tire.

WEEK 4: 4/25                                                                                              “Bearings make your bike go round!”                                                                                                      - Ever wonder what makes your bike such a cool machine? Why sometimes the ride is smooth and sometimes a little noisy? What IS a bearing? A look at all of the bearing groups on a bike. We will cover how bearings work and proper bearing maintenance and adjustment.

Pedals and Cranks:                                                                                          -What different types of pedals and cranks are there?What ARE cranksets? What pedals do I want? What cranks work on my bike? All of these questions will be answered in this class.

Wheels:                                                                                                                       - Did you buy a new bike and want to upgrade the wheels? Wheel got stolen and you want to know how to replace it? Do you want to find a new set of tires for your wheels? We will cover all of this and also basic wheel maintenance during this class

Brakes: identifying/ adjusting/replacing:                                                          - Can’t stop in time? Brakes squealing? This class will show you how to assess your brakes and wheels to make sure that you can stop in time for any situation.

Chains:                                                                                                                        - This is a short lesson on how to check your chain for wear and how to replace it when it is worn.

Gears:                                                                                                                              - Is your bike shifting odd? Not shifting at all? Does it make horrible noises when you try to shift? This is the workshop for you.

Bike Safety:                                                                                                                - We will cover basic riding etiquette, what gear you should have to keep you safe on the road, and open the floor to discussion on how to plan a safe route.

Hubs:                                                                                                                           - How to assess and service your hubs

Bottom Brackets: “what’s that sound when i pedal?”                                        - Do you hear a creakin’ when you pedal. It’s probably your Bottom Bracket. What’s a Bottom Bracket? We will answer that.

Single Speed Conversions:                                                                              -This workshop is for those who want to be rid of their gears and cruise along with the simplicity of a bike. The workshop will inform you of what kind of bike can be easily converted into a single-speed and what parts you will need to do so.

Workshop Structure:                                                                                         -10 min of introductions/orientation                                                                                        -20 min theory/lecture                                                                                                                 -30min of hands on with instruction                                                                                            -1.5 hours of open shop/online shopping assistance                                                        -30min of clean up

    OOO- could you please put up something that tells us what each of these terms (truing, headsets, etc) means? Still learning all of this…

  2. Wondering if the classes will ever be held on a a night other than Thursday. I work until 8pm every Thursday so I can’t make the current schedule. I know you please everyone’s schedule, but figured it didn’t hurt to ask.
